One of the most exciting and memorable parts of being a child is receiving education toys and then playing with them for years to come, enjoying endless hours and making countless memories. The best, however, were always those simple yet elegant toys that never seem to go out of style, such as the yo-yo or a beloved stuffed animal. One example nearly everyone can agree upon is Legos. These famous plastic bricks have sparked the imaginations of countless children and adults across the world. No wonder so many people buy Legos every year!
Maybe you fondly remember Legos from your own childhood and want to gift them to a child you know, or maybe you want to get a set for yourself so you can relive the magic. You’ll understandably be quite eager to get some and start building. But wait a moment — Legos have changed somewhat over the years, and you need to know what you’re getting into.
First up are the classic sets of bricks, those tubs or boxes that were filled with a varied assortment of bricks in all sizes, shapes, and colors. With these, you can do just about anything from creating a city to designing a starship. For most people, these are the way Legos were meant to be played with and it just doesn’t get any better than this.
Sometimes, though, Lego fans want something a bit different. For this reason, Lego has taken to offering “kits”, highly detailed toys that are sold in loose brick form for the user to assemble. Such kits might be available for a medieval castle or a pirate ship, and many showcase popular movie franchises such as Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. The only drawback to these is that the pieces aren’t as universal; you can usually only build the one thing with them and not much else.
For those who are truly serious about the building potential of Legos, there are certain high-end kits available that are designed to let the builder create machines or toys with moving parts, computer programs, and so on. As such, they include battery-operated motors, plugs to interface with computers, and much more. While these may be too complex for some children, they remain consistently popular among adults.
Once you know what you want to buy, take steps to ensure that you get the best possible price. For some reason, Legos often seem to be sold at inflated prices.
The best way to get cheap lego is often to buy used from local sources or from the internet. Failing that, just shop around and do your research.
While a trip to the store to buy Legos has become a bit more complex over the years, it’s really in keeping with Lego’s primary virtue: opening up new frontiers of the imagination. In this sense, having more options is definitely a good thing, and with just a little research, you can enjoy your Legos for years to come.
