Quality Time With Legos

When we think about spending quality time with our kids, especially when they are young, it can feel like you have to turn off your brain. Playing trucks on the carpet gets pretty boring. That’s why we play Legos with the kids. The story possibilities with Legos are practically endless. Building Legos to tell a story is a great way to engage kids on several levels.

First, any Legos will do. If you have some figures — like Legos Star Wars figures or Castle Legos, which feature knights in armor — that will help kids really engage in the story. The story can be fit to the child’s level. For younger children, a simple story about a boy or a girl who lives in a house in the woods and meets a talking bird would be perfect. Together you construct the house using the Legos toys. The child is learning to think abstractly as he or she takes a simple square block and connects it to another simple square block to make something entirely new. And each new Lego prop brings the story forward.

I got this idea from playing role playing games with friends and using the Legos as game pieces and props to tell the game story. Of course it works with kids of all ages! As the kids get older, the stories can get very complex, bordering on the complexity of a full role playing adventure. LEGO castle setThis quality time with your kids, sharing stories and Legos might sound a little hokey or way too nerdy for some parents, but think of it as no different than reading a bed time story to your children. The difference is that you have props and the story is interactive!

One of the great things about Legos is their versatility. Legos for girls, Legos for boys — it doesn’t really matter. They’re just perfect toys for girls and boys because it is what you, the parent, and your child both bring to the table that matters. The Lego princess might need rescuing or she could be the rescuer herself! Build a castle and then attack it. Sink the pirate ship or capture it and refit it so no one recognizes it! The possibilities are as endless as imagination. Teach your children to be storytellers and engineers at the same time with Legos.
