Children are bombarded these days with thousands of different types of education toys for all age ranges and interests. It’s great that there’s such a wide selection but many of these modern toys end up forgotten after a month or two as the latest craze moves onto something else. Modern plastic toys are also usually less sturdy than their traditional equivalents and can easily end up quickly broken, causing tears and tantrums.
If you’d like your child to play with well built toys that have stood the test of time and will provide countless hours of play without being thrown to the back of the toy cupboard, traditional toys are the way to go. Children have played with simple toys such as dolls, wooden pull toys and rocking horses for generations and these toys are just as popular today as they were a hundred years ago.
Simple wooden toys are great for babies and toddlers. They can be thrown around without breaking, they are warm and enjoyable to touch and play with and they don’t contain harmful chemicals, unlike most plastic toys. Something as simple as wooden blocks or a pull along wooden vehicle will provide hours of entertainment for a young child.
All little girls love playing with dolls and there’s a huge range to choose from these days. To be really traditional you could even make your own rag doll which will be a treasured possession for many years. To encourage your child’s play, prams for dolls are another example of a great toy that has been enjoyed by little girls since Victorian times.
Another great Victorian toy is the rocking horse. Children love pretending to ride a wooden horse as if it is a real animal and the rocking motion is soothing. Children of all ages can enjoy rocking toys and they now come as all sorts of animals – not just horses!
